Prologis Headquarters Recognized For Environmental Design

ProLogis (Denver, Colo.), a global provider of distribution facilities and services, announced that its new global headquarters in Denver has been recognized for its extensive use of environmental design features by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The 89,000-square-foot building, located at 4545 Airport Way in Denver, received LEED certification from the council, a building industry nonprofit group that promotes sustainable development. LEED stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” and has become the U.S. national standard for environmentally responsible construction.

“Around the world, environmental sustainability is emerging as an issue of growing public interest and importance,” said Jack Rizzo, ProLogis managing director for global development.

“Governments, research institutions and the private sector are working together to reduce energy usage, water consumption and carbon emissions associated with commercial and residential projects.

“As one of the world’s largest industrial builders, it has been incumbent on ProLogis to develop expertise in this area, and it made sense for us to incorporate industry-leading design techniques into our new headquarters facility. We’re extremely pleased to receive this designation, which we believe signifies our company’s overall global commitment to environmental quality.”

In recognizing the facility, the council cited the project’s wide array of environmental design features, including:

  • A site plan that reduces storm water runoff, building heat absorption and overall ecological impact;
  • Heavy use of local and regional construction materials;
  • Extensive recycling of construction waste;
  • Energy-efficient lighting systems and light harvesting;
  • State-of-the-art HVAC;
  • High-performance glass that reduces energy consumption while allowing for a high degree of light transmittance;
  • Water-efficient landscaping and irrigation;
  • On-site showers and locker facilities that promote biking to work;
  • Charging stations for electric vehicles;
  • Construction and design techniques that enhance indoor air quality for employees.

ProLogis’ new world headquarters formally opened on February 16, 2006. The five-story building is located near the intersection of Interstate 70 and Peña Boulevard, the main access road to Denver International Airport. It can accommodate up to 325 people and houses all of ProLogis’ Denver-based employees, including those in corporate functions and North American real estate operations.

The new headquarters was designed by the award-winning Gensler architectural firm. Saunders Construction Inc. of Denver was the builder; and The Post Group LLC served as project manager. M.E. Group served as LEED certification consultant for the project.
