Alcoa Corporation is hosting an interactive educational seminar on the bottom line manufacturing issues associated with profiting from environmental sustainability. The “Sustainable Manufacturing 2011 Program Series includes presentations on recycling, lean, and safety, as well as a facility tour demonstrating how Alcoa has implemented many sustainability initiatives.

• Hazmat
Shippers face rising enforcement and potential shipping delays under the new U.S. DOT Enhanced Enforcement Authority Procedures rule. The March 3, 2011 rulemaking gives U.S. DOT inspectors broader authority to stop, open, and detain non-compliant hazmat shipments during transit. All hazmat shippers, especially those transporting pharmaceuticals or other highly sensitive materials, must ensure all packages are in strict compliance with the rules. Failure to comply with the new rule will result in costly penalties, shipping delays, and returned shipments. Fines for non-compliance are now up to $55,000 per day, per violation for civil penalties and up to $110,000 per day, per violation for criminal penalties.
To help the regulated community ensure compliance, Lion Technology will offer several hands-on workshops featuring in-depth discussions of the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR) for ground shipping and the IATA and IMO Dangerous Goods Regulations for air and ocean shipping.

• Transportation Infrastructure
Lawmakers in Congress are working on replacing the legislation governing federal surface transportation programs (known as SAFETEA-LU). However, a lack of consensus on how to fund those programs could make progress difficult this year. Whatever Congress decides will determine the role state governments will play in meeting transportation needs over the next several years.
This will be the focus of The Council of State Governments’ upcoming webinar, Federal Transportation Reauthorization, scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT April 11. This free webinar’s speakers include Peter "Jack" Basso of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Donna Cooper of the Center for American Progress and Ronald Utt of The Heritage Foundation.
