Lockheed Martin selected viastore systems (Grand Rapids, Mich.), a supplier of automated material handling and supply chain execution software, to provide an automated storage retrieval system (AS/RS) for the expansion of its engineering and production facility in Orlando, Florida. Viastore systems will manufacture and install a three-aisle, mini-load automated storage retrieval system using viaspeed storage/retrieval machines to support a kitting operation prior to manufacturing.

The new Materials Center is adjacent to arecently renovated factory at the Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control facility in Orlando, Florida. Construction has already begun with a projected system start-up set for July. The new facility will support the manufacturing of fire control products.

The three storage/retrieval machines will allow access to approximately 5,700 trays of product, each weighing up to 250 lbs. In addition, viastore will provide a new tray handling conveyor system. The controls for the system include PLC controls for the conveyor system, the IPC control for the storage/retrieval machines, and software packages including an interface to Lockheed Martin’s warehouse management system

“Since we built a fire control factory of the future, it only makes sense we construct a state-of-the-art materials center in support of the factory,” said Don Harding, production planning and control director at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “We have designed a Materials Center that is lean and flexible, with optimal flow and velocity.”
