Videojet Technologies Inc. has announced the acquisition of Zipher Ltd, a UK-based manufacturer of thermal transfer and large-character ink jet printers.

Videojet is a provider of product identification equipment, including large- and small-character ink jet printers, thermal transfer printers and laser markers, as well as print & apply and labeling systems. The acquisition of Zipher solidifies Videojet's position as a major player in the rapidly growing thermal transfer printing market. The partnership also enhances Videojet's range of high-resolution ink jet printers.

"Zipher has a proven track record of developing market-leading products for the coding and marking industry," stated Robert Willett, president of coding and marking for Videojet. "Videojet intends to leverage Zipher's outstanding engineering expertise and industry knowledge to develop robust solutions that address the current and emerging needs of our customers and the marketplace."

For the past three years, Videojet has been successfully selling Zipher's thermal transfer printers, marketed under the DataFlex brand, and large-character, high-resolution ink jet printers, marketed under the Willett 610 brand. In addition to marketing products through Videojet, Zipher has developed an effective sales network known as Interactive Coding Equipment, or ICE. Videojet plans to maintain and invest in the ICE network. Videojet provides its customers with a wide range of coding and marking products, comprehensive technical service and support, efficient consumables and spares management and outstanding customer care. The ICE network has similar beliefs and operates effectively in the markets it serves.

"Videojet and Zipher share a similar culture and set of ideals, which will simplify integration activities and form the basis for a successful partnership," stated Willett. "Both organizations place a high regard on developing and retaining superior people. Each organization also strives to understand the needs of the marketplace and its customers, and this understanding serves as the cornerstone around which new product development and operations strategy is created and executed."

Videojet's world headquarters is located in Wood Dale, Illinois. The headquarters of Zipher will remain in Nottingham, England.
