TORONTO—On Nov. 13, Wal-Mart Canada Corp. asked 800 of its suppliers to help the giant retailer reduce its packaging by 5% by 2013.

Wal-Mart made the request at a seminar in Toronto. Wal-Mart said reducing its global packaging by 5% would remove 213,000 trucks from the road, saving 324,000 tons of coal and 253 million liters of diesel fuel a year.
