Wavelink Corporation, a provider of mobile infrastructure software for the enterprise, announced that its mobile device management software, Wavelink Avalanche, is embedded in the Fujitsu iPAD, a handheld device for mobile applications that runs on 802.11b and other wireless infrastructures. As a result, Fujitsu’s partners and customers can now efficiently manage their hardware, reduce the cost of support and make their mobile solutions more productive.

The Avalanche-equipped iPAD provides Fujitsu customers with an out-of-the-box solution to maintain visibility and control over mobile devices from a single management console without ever physically touching the device. This ability to immediately manage devices over the air enables Fujitsu customers to reduce the cost and time required to support and maintain their mobile IT, further leveraging their investment in the technology.

Avalanche also enables enterprises to avoid high variable costs normally associated with supporting wireless devices one at a time including updating software, firmware and configurations by enabling centralized management of an unlimited number of devices. The industry analyst firm Gartner Dataquest reports that the costs associated with ongoing maintenance and support of PDA-type devices typically dwarf the initial hardware investment, and range from $2,500 to $3,000 per device per year.

Wavelink Avalanche supports a range of wireless device platforms from legacy DOS-based devices to next-generation, Palm OS, and WinCE/PocketPC-based devices, along with industrial devices from companies such as Symbol Technologies, Fujitsu and PSC. Avalanche, which enables enterprises to support a heterogeneous installed base of devices from a single management console, is completely scalable and can connect with any device that has an IP address, regardless of the wireless network standard in use.
