"Purchasing which includes inventory control and negotiating is not a high profile function, but is very satisfying career when you win a negotiation as well as always maintaining J.I.T. inventory to maximize profitability. I think of myself as a puppeteer holding the strings of several entities and making them work together without getting tangled. It's a tough career with regard to when something fails, late trucks or rail strikes or bad counts of goods then everyone knows from the janitor to the C.E.O. and all our dealers (because their orders will be delayed). The single biggest postitive is the fact that as a Purchasing Manager I have a huge impact on the financial viability of our company."

"My position continually is compared back to previous employees when the company was not near as big or as busy. Too many other jobs are dropped into this department because no one else has time. This department is not taken seriously and continually turns over employees. The owner does not seem to know what really happens back here. I know I could make twice as much in a similar position due to my experience, but many companies either do not take purchasing seriously, or they want a purchasing degree which is not offered in too many schools."

"My compensation does not reflect my value to the company, my education level, my experience nor my peer group. During the interview process, I was told with conviction that there were professional growth opportunities for me and that a six-figure income was possible. The truth of the matter is that our company suffers from nepotism, cronyism and favoritism. The true positive for me is that I work with and for some fabulous and talented people who are driven to make our company as successful as possible. I also take pride each day in the significant process improvements that have been made under my direction. "
Job title/function: Other; Industry: Apparel; Age: 55; Education: Graduate degree; Experience: 21; Location: South Atlantic; Direct Pay: $70,500; Annual Bonus: $0

"My company changed direction. When I was hired 8 years ago, when I was an Engineering Consultant, I was told I would be potentially eligible for 3 management positions here over the next 4 years. It was stressed they were like a family because most employees had worked there for over 20 years. The company philosophy changed. To be eligible for a promotion one had to relocate. So, I'm considering options. "

"Manage only one full time employee because they won't give me any more assistance . Probably because I've been stupid enough to keep everything running, NC machinery, material handling equipment, HVAC and also building maintenance. Have never been offered any training , just the problems when warranties were gone , or if they couldn't wait for the OEM servicemen to arrive . My immediate supervisor has told me and the company owners that when I retire they're going to have to hire three people in three different skill experiences to replace me. People with electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, part purchasing skills and so on . As long as I'm getting the job done, they're not interested in finding someone for me to train. Yes, I believe that I'm underpaid . "

"Looks like most companies want my experience level but don't want to pay for that experience. The company I work for seems to think that those of us over 45 years old are captive and can ignore us went it comes to compensation. Job title/function: Other; Industry: Automotive; Age: 29; Education: High school; Experience: 3; Location: North Central; Direct Pay: $43,000; Annual Bonus: $500

"I work for an automotive company. The environment is very negative. Job security, health care benefits, personnel taking early retirements with incentives and a contract year to boot. Management is pushing to get anyone they can out the door. And many of the management want to get out, too. The incentives for the salary bargaining portion is much better than the salary offer, and this has the salary personnel upset. Time for change is coming upon us extremely fast and few persons are adjusting well to the changing climate of the automotive industry. We have always had excellent benefits because of the UAW. Salary management has benefited from these perks, even if they said they do not like the unions. The same of it all is that the very persons that build up the company and the profits made over the past years are not given any credit for their sacrifices."
Job title/function: Other; Industry: Automotive; Age: 59; Education: Graduate degree; Experience: 35; Location: North Central; Direct Pay: $78,000; Annual Bonus: $0

"I work for a small (70 employees) family-owned regional company where job stability is the primary benefit. Salary, bonus compensation and upward mobility are quite restricted if you are not a family member. As ownership has been passed down, the level of office tension has increased while employee benefits (company celebrations and get togethers) have been cut. "

"I work for a fairly small contract manufacturer who is very cost conscious. Our location is not in an area that has a tremendous number of jobs in the Import/Export area so opportunities are not as common as areas like Seattle, Portland or San Francisco (I am in Spokane, WA), and the cost of living is dramatically different here in Spokane vs. SF or Seattle."
Job title/function: Other; Industry: Electronics/High-Tech/Telecom Equipment; Age: 42; Education: 4-year undergraduate degree; Experience: 17; Location: Pacific; Direct Pay: $61,000; Annual Bonus: $1,000

"I love the professional challenges of finding the right application to resolve issues. One must keep in mind that you must be a person that that gets self satisfaction out of resoling these issues because there is very seldom any rewards. Especially dealing with internal customers. Everyone wants their requisition first. This job is for a person that is good with hyper tasking, with the realization that you will burn out and might use all your accumulated vacation time all at one time."
