The U.S. Coast Guard has notified the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) that its facility security plan has been certified and is in compliance with all security regulations.

The GPA submitted the plan for all four of its deepwater terminals prior to the December 31, 2003, deadline set by the Maritime Security Transportation Act of 2002. Security upgrades that led to compliance at Garden City and Ocean Terminal in Savannah and Colonel's Island and Mayor's Point Terminal in Brunswick include access controls, credentialing, detection and prevention programs.

The Port of Savannah is one of 13 U.S. Strategic Ports that supports military cargo deployments.
