In its Docket 2004-2, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association's classification committee identifies proposed changes in freight classifications that could affect rates for shippers of various commodities. Section I of the Public Docket File contains amendments that will be considered by the National Classification Committee. Public meetings of the NMFTA will be held May 3 and 4, 2004 at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, 625 First Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
The deadline for submission of comments and written statements to be included in those meetings is April 5, 2004. Comments can be addressed to the National Classification Committee, 2200 Mill Road, Alexandria, VA 22314 or sent via FAX to (703) 683-1094. The committee is also accepting e-mail submissions addressed to the staff contact involved with the particular classification.
The public docket is available at the NMFTA Web site (www.nmfta.org/2004_2.htm). The docket contains a list of the proposed changes and the contacts by commodity group along with telephone numbers and e-mail addresses.
Though the National Industrial Transportation League called the classification system a "remnant of the old days," it has urged its members to examine the docket and assess any impact it might have on their companies. The National Motor Freight Classification is often incorporated into individual motor carriers' rate tariffs.
Proposed changes in the NMF Classification document will be published in a supplement June 24, 2004 with an effective date of July 24, 2004, unless arbitration or reconsideration is sought in accordance with the National Classification Committee's rules. Those rules are also contained in documents available through the NMFTA Web site at www.nmfta.org
