TWINSBURG, OH – Pepperl+Fuchs introduces the MAC34x family of data matrix readers. The MAC340 and MAC344 are fixed mounted data matrix readers for product identification or online data recording.
The MAC340 offers a scan distance of 32 millimeters and depth of field of ±3 millimeters, while the MAC344 offers a scan distance of 90 millimeters and a depth of field of ±7 millimeters. Both feature a digital signal processor that works in real time for a processing rate of approximately 150 million instructions per second. Decoding and data supply takes place in the reader.
The IP54 protected MAC344 and IP65 protected MAC340 uses a data matrix code with a symbol size of 16x16 and a minimum module size of 0.35 mm. The result is progressive scanning with 25 evaluations per second and 6 m/s object transport speed. The unit reads data matrix codes omni-directionally, making it unnecessary to read codes only on the top of cylindrical objects. Codes may be placed anywhere on the item and still be readable.
This family of data matrix readers features an optical anti-mirror system to suppress light reflections on glossy surfaces, so objects no longer have to be tilted to achieve a good read. Ambient light problems also are eliminated with a high energy flash synchronized with the camera functions and trigger signal. Only 27 microseconds are necessary to freeze the picture.
Additional features include a separate evaluation box, flexible RS-232 interface and quick adaptation of protocols, A VGA monitor output to connect to a PC monitor, an optical module that can be turned 90 degrees, and OMNICONTROL software with various means of error diagnosis. An optional Matchcode Mode allows users to store reference data for comparison to actual read data to achieve pass/fail outputs.
Data Matrix allows detailed information to be carried on even the smallest of objects. Read-reliability is significantly increased since the information is "scattered" over the entire data field, with 20% to 30% information redundancy. Labeling costs can be greatly reduced by lasering or needling a Data Matrix symbol directly on the part. Data Matrix symbols can be applied using nearly any printing process, including offset, Thermo-Transfer, Inkjet, laser and direct laser marking.
