SEATTLE, Wash. and SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Impinj Inc., a supplier of UHF Gen 2 RFID technologies, announced that it has acquired Intel Corp.’s RFID operation. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The acquisition adds an integrated reader-radio chip to Impinj’s product portfolio. The R1000 chip integrates 90% of the components required for a reader radio onto a single chip, according to Impinj. The result is a chip that enables all reader-form factors—fixed, mobile, embedded and others—in applications across vertical markets, including supply chain management, asset tracking, authentication and access control.
“The demand for a highly integrated technology like the R1000 reader chip is growing every day,” says Mike Liard at ABI Research. “The choice for Intel–the world’s largest and most recognized chip maker–to work with Impinj is a clear indication of Impinj’s role as a frontrunner in the RFID industry.”
