Last week Target (Minneapolis) celebrated the grand opening of its two million sq.-ft. import warehouse located in the Savannah River International Trade Park. The Savannah, Ga., warehouse, which will handle overseas cargo and merchandise for the retailer's southeast stores, will employ around 100 people. With the opening of this facility and a 1.5 million sq.-ft. distribution center in Midway, Ga., which is scheduled to open within the next few months, Target will employ more than 8,900 people in the state.
"We could not be more pleased or excited about the tremendous opportunities that this new facility will bring to the people of Savannah," said Mitch Stover, senior v.p. of distribution. "We are also deeply humbled by the warm welcome and outpouring of support that Governor Perdue and other state and local officials have shown Target over the past two years in getting us to this day."
"The investments we have made in our infrastructure, particularly at our ports, continue to result in new investment and job creation," added Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue.
In total Target operates 47 stores in Georgia, including 10 SuperTarget stores, and a 1.5 million-square-foot distribution center in Tifton that employs 800 people.
