Abu Ghraib to Become Warehouse

Within months the notorious Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq will close and the U.S. military will transfer the 4,500 prisoners held there to Camp Cropper, which currently houses former dictator Saddam Hussein.

"There will be no detainees in Abu Ghraib. It will just be used as a storage facility for the Justice Ministry," said Iraqi Justice Minister Abd al-Hussein Shandel. Located in a Baghdad suburb of the same name, the facility has come under regular attack by insurgents.

"We will transfer operations from Abu Ghraib to the new Camp Cropper once construction is completed there," said a military spokesman in a news report. "No precise dates have been set, but the plan is to accomplish this within the next two to three months."
