CINCINNATI—At his own request, Fredric J. Baur, the man who designed the Pringles potato crisp packaging system, had his ashes placed in a Pringles container.
Baur, who died in May at age 89, was especially proud of his design for the Pringles can, a cardboard cylinder with a metal bottom and a tight plastic lid. Baur filed for a patent for the tubular Pringles container and for the method of packaging the curved, stacked chips in the container in 1966. The patent was granted in 1970.
Baur was an organic chemist and food-storage technician who specialized in research and development and quality control for Procter & Gamble Co.
