ORLANDO, Fla.—CHEP, a provider of pallet and container pooling services leasing, has joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a collaborative program between the U.S. EPA and the freight industry.
CHEP announced it is using EPA tools and strategies to measure and reduce its environmental impact as well as the efficiency of its freight operations and fuel usage.
The SmartWay Transport Partnership is designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution. The goal of the partnership is to reduce 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012.
Joining the SmartWay Transport Partnership is part of CHEP’s larger initiative to reduce its corporate environmental footprint. The company is an Energy Star partner with the EPA and Department of Energy and works to reduce energy use in its buildings and facilities. CHEP also has programs in place that support material reuse and recycling, and the company recently launched a hybrid vehicle incentive program, which compensates employees for purchasing eco-friendly vehicles.
“By joining SmartWay Transport Partnership, CHEP is demonstrating its strong environmental leadership and corporate responsibility,” says Michael Lamb, president of CHEP USA. “Our customers also benefit from our membership as they see efficiency improvements to the company’s operations.”
“As a SmartWay partner, CHEP will be joining a nationwide push towards environmental protection, health risk reduction, and fuel efficiency,” adds Julius Heil, vice president of logistics at CHEP.
