CHICAGO—Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. has joined the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), an organization dedicated to sustainable development through economic growth, ecological balance and social progress.

Smurfit-Stone, a producer of integrated paperboard products, handled approximately 6.6 million tons of recycled fiber in 2006. The company uses recyclable and recycled fiber, renewable energy sources and environmentally responsible raw material sourcing.

The company is also a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) and a founding member of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). As part of its CCX membership, the company has made a voluntary and legally binding commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 6% below baseline by 2010.

The WBCSD has some 200 members from more than 35 countries and 20 industrial sectors. Membership is by invitation of the WBCSD's executive committee.
