On Tuesday, May 9, Symbol Technologies announced the sale of its 500,000th MC9000, its flagship mobile computer. Introduced two and half years ago, Symbol reports that the MC9000 is now the best-selling rugged mobile computer on the market.

The milestone unit was purchased by longstanding customer Coca-Cola Enterprises to increase worker productivity and improve operational efficiencies. “The Symbol MC9000 mobile computer is an integral part of our overall mobile solution. The new technology allows us to deliver applications with new functionality - such as signature capture and e-documents, that make our business more effective,” said Jim Long, manager, mobile computing services, Coca-Cola Enterprises.

The MC9000 combines wide area network (WAN), 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN (WLAN) and Bluetooth-enabled wireless personal area network (WPAN). According to market research firm Venture Development Corp., the rugged mobile computing market will grow 8.5% annually through 2008, reaching almost $5.1 billion.
