Intermodal Port Proposed for Navajo, Arizona

March 25, 2009
Intermodal shipments would move to and from a Foreign Trade Zone to be established at the Rolling Hills Ranch.

As the developer explains, Rolling Hills Ranches is a ranch community in northern Arizona. It is comprised of two parts. One side is made up of 40 acre or larger sites for home building or ranching. The commercial side faces east- and west-running Interstate 40. At present it has a rail spur operated by the Salt River Project coal-fired plant that connects to Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail lines.

Tentatively named the Port of Navajo, if it does become reality, the port would allow import shipments to be brought closer to the interior of the US. Also part of the plan is to leverage alternative, renewable sources of power generation for use, including permanent solar roof arrays.
