Hybrid Truck In Production

May 7, 2008
Freightliner Trucks announced Class 6 hybrid truck rolled off the production line and into service.

Claiming the position of the first truck manufacturer to offer a drop-frame, hybrid electric beverage truck, Freightliner said the vehicle was designed for sustainability. “Our customers want a better business tool that improves efficiency and environmental stewardship,” said Melissa Kellogg, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks.

The hybrid electric vehicle features a diesel engine coupled with an electric motor/generator and batteries. The electric motor works in line with the engine and transmission enabling operation with electric or diesel power either separately or together, the company explained.

The M2 106 can cut fuel consumption by as much as 30% and reduce idling time by up to 87%, claims Mark Lloyd, market development manager for Eaton. Eaton developed and supplies the hybrid electric system for the vehicle.

The vehicle was first introduced as a prototype in 2006.
