In his remarks before the Subcommittee, Edward R. Hamberger, president and ceo of the Association of American Railroads, noted that while it might be expected that the Association he heads would reject reregulation, a sizeable “outpouring of opposition to this bill comes from the railroad customer community.” Hamberger argued that deregulation – since the Staggers Rail Act of 1980 – has meant an improvement in service to railroad customers and a lowering of their rates by 60%. www.aar.org
