L.A. Port Contract Ratified

Feb. 21, 2013
Business interests now hope the same stability will come to the East and Gulf Coast Ports.

The bargaining units of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 Office Clerical Unit (OCU) voted to ratify the terms of tentative agreements it reached with the Los Angeles / Long Beach Harbor Employers Association on December 4, 2012.  The contracts for roughly 600 office clerical workers and the 14 employers at the ports will run through June 30, 2016.

“The approved agreements, to be finalized in coming days, are good for workers, good for employers and—most of all—important in ensuring smooth operations at our Southern California ports,” said John Fageaux, lead negotiator for the OCU.  “Our local, regional and national economies depend on these ports, and the agreements ratified pave the way for continued growth in the years ahead.

In response, the National Retail Federation issued the following statement from Jonathan Gold, vice president for supply chain and Customs policy:

“The contract will bring much-needed stability to the supply chain, better position the ports for future growth and provide retailers the certainty they need to prepare for the upcoming summer shopping season. Now it is time to turn our attention to the East and Gulf Coast ports. NRF reiterates our call on the International Longshoremen’s Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance to quickly conclude ongoing local contract negotiations and urge them to ratify a new master contract.”
