Motor Freight Classification Guide Due

The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) guide, used by shippers and carriers to categorize and group commodities for interstate and intrastate transport, has been updated and will take effect in December. SMC3, which supplies the classification guide under an exclusive agreement with the American Trucking Associations and the National Motor Freight Traffic Association Inc., said it is taking pre-orders for the book.

The NMFC is used to classify freight based on density, stowability, ease of handling and liability. The publication is developed through NMFTA’s National Classification Committee which holds public meetings in which proposals for changes are reviewed. Anyone may propose a change to the NMFC and appear at any of the meetings or submit statements expressing a point of view regarding a Classification proposal, explained SMC3.

The 100-AE version of the NMFC is scheduled for release November 24th with an effective date of December 25th.
