Free Time to Drop, Demurrage Costs Rise

Further evidence that the global container shortage continues comes in the form of a report by the National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) which told its members several ocean carriers intend to change policies on demurrage and detention. As part of those changes, said NITL, the carriers will reduce free time on cargo that is at an interchange terminal awaiting processing. The carriers also said they would increase demurrage and detention charges, though NITL reported its members say the increases are likely to vary by carrier.
