DHL, Global Mail Services Pause Shipping to US as De Miniumis Exemption is Suspended August 29

Aug. 26, 2025
In 2024, over 92% of all cargo entering the U.S., including 1.3 billion packages worth over $64 billion, arrived through the de minimis exemption.

A major logistics shakeup will occur on August 29. That is when tariff exemptions for packages shipped to the U.S. that are worth $800 or less will be suspended.

On July 30, President Trump issued an executive order, Spending Duty-Free, De Minimis Treatment for all Countries.

In light of this suspension, on July 22, DHL announced that Deutsche Post and DHL Parcel Germany "will no longer be able to accept and transport parcels and postal items containing goods from business customers destined for the U.S. "

The company explained that the reason for these actions, which it called temporary restrictions, is that  "new processes required by U.S. authorities for postal shipping, which differ from the previously applicable regulations. Key questions remain unresolved, particularly regarding how and by whom customs duties will be collected in the future, what additional data will be required, and how the data transmission to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be carried out."

Other global carriers, including Swiss Post and Japan Post, announced they would soon suspend shipments bound for the United States. As reported by NBC, postal services in Australia, India, New Zealand, the U.K. and other parts of Europe have said they will also stop shipping parcels to the States this week.

This shipping pause will have a large impact on business, given that fact, as reported by the Hill, in 2024, over 92% of all cargo entering the U.S., including 1.3 billion packages worth over $64 billion, arrived through the de minimis exemption, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
