NIST mobile manipulator research is testing how accurately a robot accesses part or assembly locations. A human-scale cardboard-cutout placed beside the AGV path is not in the way of the AGV although is detected as in the way of an overhanging manipulator. At right, a manipulator safety sensor (yellow) at the base of the onboard robot arm is what detects obstacles (e.g., humans or equipment) at the side of the AGV. Upon detection of obstacles, the AGV stops via hardware and software interlocks.
