Distribution has entered the "on demand" era. Customers expect products when they are ordered -- on demand, with an unprecedented level of compliance and conformity.
In light of this, the Distribution On Demand (DOD) Initiative, sponsored by Forte, recently began operations with the unveiling of its Web site: www.distributiondemand.com.
DOD is defined as the order fulfillment state an organization achieves when it can respond -- closest to real time -- to changes in demand while shipping 100 percent customer-compliant orders at the least cost.
The mission of the DOD Initiative is twofold: first, to promote distribution as a frontline business strategy rather than a back end process; and second, to establish a platform for DOD thought leadership and the exchange of ideas, thereby identifying the standards and best practices for achieving DOD.
This initial phase of the Web site introduces the initiative and DOD. The DOD Manifesto, which serves as a high level "call to arms" for the distribution segment of the supply chain, spells out the new "on demand" era.
The DOD Blog provides commentary on DOD, its implications, and the rising importance of distribution. The blog features an Atom-based XML RSS feed that permits tracking for newsreaders.
Other features include DOD in the Spotlight, DOD in the News, Principles and Benefits of DOD, and FAQ. Components of the site coming soon include the DOD Roadmap (a blueprint for achieving DOD) and the DC Dialog discussion board.
Membership offerings are available and will be expanded with future iterations of the site. Currently, contributing membership offers a subscription to DC eVOLVE, the DOD e-publication, and the opportunity to submit DOD-relevant material in the form of white papers, case studies and by-lined articles.
