NEW BREMEN, Ohio—On Nov. 2, Crown Equipment Corp. told a “significant” number of manufacturing employees that they would be laid off as of Nov. 9, according to the Dayton Daily News in Dayton, Ohio.
The affected workers were employed at Crown’s New Bremen, New Knoxville, Celina and Fort Loramie plants, all located in Ohio.
The newspaper attributed the layoffs to reduced demand for lift trucks. Randy Niekamp, Crown's vice president of human resources, said the exact number of workers laid off would not be released. He added that some of the workers might be called back if demand improves.
Niekamp also said the layoff was not large enough to require notification to Ohio under the federal Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification Act, which requires employers to provide 60-days notice of plant closings. The law states that companies with at least 50 employees are required to provide notification for layoffs affecting at least 500 workers, or one-third of the total workforce.
