His position on the current bill (S. 560) is seen as pivotal as proponents attempt to gain the necessary 60 votes for cloture and move the bill toward final passage.
Among a number of associations and other interested bodies speaking out to support the Senator’s stand is the United Fresh Produce Association. Its president and CEO, Tom Stenzel, said, “We greatly respect the serious consideration that Sen. Specter gave this issue. He clearly recognized the flaws in the bill and the fact this legislation just goes too far for average Americans in taking away workers’ right to a secret ballot.”
In describing itself, United Fresh says it “is the pre-eminent trade association for the produce industry in managing critical public policy issues; shaping legislative and regulatory action; providing scientific and technical leadership in food safety, quality assurance, nutrition and health; and developing educational programs and business opportunities for members to better meet consumer needs for increased consumption of fresh produce.”
