National Retail Systems, Inc. (NRS), providers of logistics services to U.S. retailers, pharmaceutical companies and consumer goods manufacturers, has received a 2011 Collaborative Commerce Achievement Award from the The Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions Association (VICS).

NRS was selected for the award for its use of the VICS Empty Miles Service, which enables transportation providers to match empty trailers with other pre-qualified shippers or carriers that can use the space for shipments. The Empty Miles Service is an affiliate member of the EPA/SmartWay Transport program and is aligned with the goals of the sustainable goods movement.

“We have a number of strategies for environmental-related efficiency, including idle management, speed management, tire technologies, aerodynamic features on some of our trailers, and bio-diesel,” said Raymond Wisniewski, NRS President and COO. “The VICS Empty Miles Service helps us to reduce emissions and energy consumption related to repositioning equipment, which is good for our clients, good for us and good for the environment.”

NRS began using the VICS Empty Miles Service in 2010 to optimize freight load capacity and customer service while mitigating the environmental impact of freight transportation. For every 500-mile lane NRS matches each week, the company removes 41 tons of carbon dioxide from the environment and saves 20 barrels of crude oil, according to VICS.

The 2011 VICS Collaborative Commerce Achievement Awards honor companies for their strategic thinking and leadership, as well as the implementation of GS1 US standards and VICS collaborative commerce guidelines that have resulted in more effective supply chain practices and partnerships. The awards recognize the positive results of company-wide dedication to customer satisfaction that have made continuous improvements to the supply chain.
