APL Logistics and Con-way Freight took a bold step when they joined forces to provide a time-definite guarantee on ocean shipments. How good is that guarantee?

Con-way Freight's President, Dave McClimon, points out Con-way has had guarantees since 1999. Logistics Today asked the research firm Mastio-Gale (www.mastiogale.com)to look at Con-way's performance from the West Coast (the OceanGuaranteed service moves through the Port of Los Angeles). MastoGale compiles a report card on less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers based on 19 criteria. Con-way Freight's overall performance was 7.80 vs. an industry mean of 7.19. It scored above the industry average on the West Coast in all but two categories.

In its just-completed survey of shippers, MastioGale showed Con-way Freight was more than half a point ahead of the industry mean on speed of transit (Con-way 8.48; industry mean 7.95). On the critical "delivered when promised," Con-way hit 8.52. The industry mean was 8.12.
