In its analysis of the first six months of 2005, The Colography Group finds that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) gained share in the domestic air cargo market, at the expense of UPS and DHL. The USPS remains the leader in shipment share with 37.6%. In second place is FedEx Express, with a 30.1% share.

According to the report, there were more than 1.2 billion U.S. domestic air shipments for the same period last year, a 2.2% increase. Revenues were up 3.9% to $16.2 billion.

Revenues for the three primary air freight categories climbed, although domestic letter/envelope shipments were rather flat. Package volumes were up 2.8% and air freight was up 2.2%.

“Though this is a backward look at data,” says Ted Scherck, Colography president, “it should be noted that long-term trends, once established, tend to remain in place for a while. Improvements in air volumes over the past several years have been striking. We continue to see upbeat results for domestic air activity. As for the Postal resurgence, only time will tell if the market share gains in 2005 is a lasting trend.”
