The grant awarded to Smart and Secure Tradelanes (SST) is designed to fund a project that will use advanced technology and best practices to upgrade security and efficiency of seaports that are part of the supply chain between the U.S., the U.K. and South Africa. Overall, the SST network now includes six of the world’s largest ports – as well as four others – in Asia, Europe, North and South America. The grant was awarded by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), www.tda.gov. Last year, the same agency helped fund a similar project that covered tradelanes between ports in Seattle and Bangkok.

SST is in its second phase of operation, which seeks to extend the network throughout the world, increase participation by shippers and bring into operation a number of automatic identification technologies. The latter include IMMARSAT satellite tracking and anti-intrusion sensor devices. SST presently has initiated a technological backbone that includes Radio Frequency Identification technology and networked software.
