Intermodal Association Offers Free Resources on Implementing AI

The Intermodal Association of North America offers framework that emphasizes human oversight and practical guardrails.

As every aspect of the logistics sector is implementing AI in its operations, an industry association, The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), announced on August 5 the launch of  An Intelligent Container Journey. It's a comprehensive interactive resource designed to help the intermodal industry understand and implement artificial intelligence across real-world operations.

Built over 18 months in close collaboration with freight professionals, technology leaders, and industry operators, the Journey maps how four types of AIcan strengthen performance at each stage of a container's movement from origin to empty return:

  • Large Language Models/GenAI
  • Agentic AI
  • Applied AI
  • Analytical AI 

The framework emphasizes human oversight and practical guardrails, reflecting the industry's need for intelligence that enhances rather than replaces human judgment.

"Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept for intermodal. It's beginning to reshape how freight is planned, moved, monitored, and managed," said Anne Reinke, President and CEO of IANA. "This journey addresses a critical gap: the industry needed a plain-language, operator-grounded resource that shows where AI actually helps and where human authority remains essential. An Intelligent Container Journey was built by the industry, for the industry."

What the Journey Delivers

The interactive Journey follows a single container through six operational stages: Origin, Gate & Terminal, Rail Linehaul, End Ramp, Final Mile, and Empty Return.

At each stage, the framework illustrates how different forms of AI can be used to support decision-making, from validating booking data before movement to forecasting dwell risk, estimating arrival times, improving yard operations, and optimizing asset repositioning.

The framework also addresses the risks of AI adoption: overreliance on automation, poor data quality, untested logic, trust gaps, and siloed systems.

Why This Matters Now

AI adoption in intermodal faces a practical barrier: decision-makers lack a shared, grounded understanding of what works, where it fits, and what governance is required. Existing resources are either too technical for operations professionals or too abstract to guide implementation. An Intelligent Container Journey fills that gap by making AI more concrete, operational, and actionable.
